How to Start a Dropshipping Business (2026 Guide)

Vet suppliers, check margins after ads and refunds, follow shipping and returns law, and decide whether dropshipping fits your market in the US, UK or Nigeria.

How to Start a Dropshipping Business

To start a dropshipping business, choose a niche with real demand, vet suppliers on quality and shipping speed, check your margin after ads, payment fees and refunds, register the business, follow the shipping and returns rules where your customers live, and test with a small ad budget before you scale. Dropshipping is cheap to start because you hold no stock. It is hard to sustain because you control neither product quality nor delivery, and customers blame you for both.

This guide covers how to start a dropshipping business honestly: the economics, the legal rules in the US and UK, and what changes if you sell in Nigeria.

Key takeaways

  • Low startup cost, low margin. Ads and refunds decide whether you profit.
  • Order samples from every supplier. You are legally and reputationally responsible for what arrives.
  • US law requires a reasonable basis for any shipping time you promise; UK online buyers can cancel within 14 days of delivery.
  • In Nigeria, local-supplier dropshipping with fast delivery usually beats importing slow international parcels.

Is dropshipping still profitable in 2026?

Online retail keeps growing, so demand exists. The challenge is competition: anyone can list the same supplier’s product tomorrow.

The market and the costs

US ecommerce as a share of total retail sales (Q2 each year, seasonally adjusted, %)

  • 2016 7.8%
  • 2019 10.3%
  • 2022 14.2%
  • 2024 16.1%
  • 2026 17.1%
Source: US Census Bureau, Quarterly Retail E-Commerce Sales, 2026

The share has more than doubled in a decade, so buyers are comfortable shopping online. They are also less patient with slow delivery and poor quality than they were when dropshipping first boomed.

Dropshipping vs holding inventory: which is right for you?

Factor Dropshipping Holding inventory
Upfront cash Low Medium to high
Margin per order Low Higher (bulk pricing)
Shipping speed Supplier-dependent, often slower You control it
Product quality control Limited Full
Branding and packaging Limited (some suppliers offer it) Full
Risk of unsold stock None Real
Best use Testing demand Scaling proven products

Many successful stores start with dropshipping to test products, then buy stock of the winners. See our full ecommerce business guide for that path, and our glossary entry on dropshipping.

How do you find reliable dropshipping suppliers?

Vet every supplier on the same checklist:

  • Samples. Order the product to your own address. Time the delivery and check the packaging.
  • Shipping times by country. Get written estimates for each country you will sell to.
  • Returns process. Where do returns go, who pays, and how long until you are refunded?
  • Stock and price stability. How often do products go out of stock or change price?
  • Integration. Does the supplier sync stock and tracking with your store automatically?
  • Communication. How quickly do they reply to a problem order?

Local and regional suppliers (US warehouses for US customers, UK or EU warehouses for UK customers, Lagos or Abuja wholesalers for Nigerian customers) usually ship faster than overseas suppliers, which reduces refunds and complaints.

What does it cost to start a dropshipping business?

How do you calculate dropshipping profit?

Worked example (illustrative), US store selling a $45 product:

  • Supplier price including shipping to customer: $16.00.
  • Card fee: 2.9% × $45 + $0.30 = $1.31 + $0.30 = $1.61.
  • Apps and platform, allocated per order: $1.00.
  • Refunds and chargebacks allowance: 8% of revenue = 0.08 × $45 = $3.60.
  • Cost before ads: $16 + $1.61 + $1 + $3.60 = $22.21.
  • Contribution before ads: $45 − $22.21 = $22.79.

If your ads cost $25 to win a customer, you lose $2.21 on every first order. To profit you need either a lower acquisition cost, a higher order value (bundles, upsells) or repeat purchases through email. That last point is why many stores add email marketing before scaling ads.

Watch fraud too. Stolen-card orders lead to chargebacks and lost product; see our glossary entry on ecommerce fraud.

What laws apply to dropshipping?

United States. Register with your state and get a free EIN. Check sales tax registration rules for your state and states where you sell a lot (SBA). Under the FTC’s Mail, Internet or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule, you need a reasonable basis for any shipping time you state (or 30 days if you state none). If you can’t ship on time you must offer the buyer the choice to wait or cancel for a prompt refund, and refunds for most payment methods are due within seven working days of cancellation (FTC).

United Kingdom. Register as a sole trader or limited company (GOV.UK). Customers can cancel online orders up to 14 days after delivery without a reason, and you must show your business details, total price, delivery costs and cancellation rights before they order (GOV.UK). VAT registration is required above £90,000 taxable turnover in 12 months (GOV.UK).

Nigeria. Register with the CAC. Importing small parcels from overseas suppliers means long and unpredictable delivery, customs charges and exchange-rate risk. Local dropshipping, partnering with Nigerian wholesalers who deliver within days, often works better. Regulated products (food, cosmetics, drugs) need NAFDAC registration (NAFDAC).

How to start a dropshipping business: step by step

Test before you scale

  1. Pick a niche

A specific audience with a problem, not a trending gadget.

  2. Shortlist 3–5 products

Each with room for at least a 2.5x markup over supplier cost.

  3. Vet suppliers

Samples, shipping times, returns and integration.

  4. Run the numbers

Contribution after fees and refunds, and the most you can pay for a customer.

  5. Register and set up the store

Business and tax registration, store, legal pages (shipping, returns, privacy, terms).

  6. Test with a small budget

One channel, a fixed budget, a target cost per order. Kill losers fast.

  7. Build retention

Welcome and post-purchase emails, bundles and a reason to come back.

How do dropshipping stores get customers?

  • Paid social. TikTok and Meta ads are the usual testing ground. Measure cost per order, not likes. Our paid ads service covers creative testing and tracking.
  • Creators. Send samples to small creators in your niche for honest reviews, disclosed as ads.
  • Search. Useful buying guides and comparison pages bring cheaper traffic over time.
  • Email. Abandoned cart, welcome and post-purchase flows recover sales you already paid for.

I'd fix the store before spending on ads. Paid traffic only amplifies what the page already does. If shipping times, returns and the total price aren't clear before checkout, you'll pay for clicks that never convert. Answer those questions on the product page, test it on a phone, then run small ad tests and judge them on cost per order, not views.

FactTo the customer and the law, you are the seller. US and UK consumer rules apply to your store, whoever ships the parcel.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to start dropshipping?

You can launch a store for under $100 or £80 a month in platform and app fees, but plan for a few hundred to a few thousand in samples and ad testing.

Is dropshipping legal?

Yes. You must register for tax, follow consumer protection law where your customers live, and sell only products that are legal and safe there.

Is dropshipping profitable in 2026?

For some stores. Margins are thin, so profit depends on low acquisition costs, higher order values, low refund rates and repeat customers.

Can I do dropshipping in Nigeria?

Yes, but slow international shipping and customs make overseas suppliers risky for Nigerian customers. Partnering with local wholesalers who deliver quickly usually gives a better customer experience.

Do I need a business license to dropship?

You need business and tax registration. Some US states and cities require a general business licence and a seller's permit for sales tax. Check your state and local rules.

If your store gets traffic but few orders, a growth audit will show where buyers drop off.
