What is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of writing and structuring pages so that a system answering a question, not just ranking links, can pick your passage as the answer. The answer engine might be a featured snippet, a voice assistant, Google’s AI Overviews or a chatbot like ChatGPT. AEO asks one thing of every page: if a machine had to quote one paragraph from you, would that paragraph fully answer the question?

Why answer engine optimization matters

Search results increasingly end with an answer, not a list. When the answer is good enough, people stop there. That changes what “winning” a query means.

What happens when Google shows an AI summary

Fewer clicks per search means the brand named inside the answer gets the attention. AEO is how you become that brand for the questions your buyers ask. Google’s version of this is AI Overviews.

How AEO works

Answer engines break a question into intent, retrieve candidate passages, and select the one that answers most directly and credibly. Google describes its AI features as using “query fan-out”: several related searches across subtopics, then a synthesized response with supporting links (Google Search Central).

Signal the engine looks for What it means on your page
A direct answer The first 40–60 words under a question heading answer it, with no preamble
Extractable structure Real HTML lists, tables and short paragraphs a model can lift cleanly
Clear entities Your brand, product and topic are named precisely, not “our solution”
Corroboration Other credible sites say the same thing about you
Indexability The page is crawlable, indexed and eligible for a snippet

Google is explicit that there is no special markup or file required to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. The page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. AEO is mostly disciplined writing on top of sound technical SEO.

Example: rewriting one answer

Take the question “How long does B2B SEO take to work?”

Before: “SEO is a long-term strategy, and every business is different. Many factors play a role, including competition, your website’s history and the resources you invest…” The answer never arrives.

After: “Most B2B sites see first movement in 2–4 months and meaningful pipeline in 6–12 months. The range depends on three things: domain authority, keyword difficulty and publishing pace.” Then a short table breaks the three factors down.

The second version gives the engine a quotable sentence with a number and a reason. It also helps the human reader, which is the point. Note that a figure like “2–4 months” has to be one you can stand behind from your own data before it goes live.

When we rewrite pages for answer engines, the hardest part is rarely the format. It's getting the team to commit to a direct answer. Founders hedge because they're afraid of being wrong. I'd rather publish a clear answer with its conditions spelled out than three paragraphs of "it depends." If you can't state it plainly, that's a sign you need better data, not more words.

How to do AEO

AEO checklist for one page

  • List the 5–10 questions buyers ask before they choose a provider like you
  • Turn each into an H2 or H3 phrased the way people type it
  • Answer in the first 40–60 words under each heading, then expand
  • Use real HTML tables for comparisons and ordered lists for processes
  • Name entities precisely: brand, product, location, standard, version
  • Add structured data that matches the visible text, such as Organization and Article
  • Check the page is indexed and not blocked by nosnippet or max-snippet rules
  • Re-run the questions in AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity monthly and log who is cited

Myth vs fact

MythAEO needs special AI markup or a new file before Google will use your content.
FactGoogle says there are no extra technical requirements or special schema for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Indexed, snippet-eligible, clearly written pages are the requirement.

AEO overlaps heavily with GEO. We treat AEO as the page-level craft of answering well, and GEO as the wider effort to be cited across generative engines.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO different from SEO?

AEO is a subset of SEO with a different finish line. SEO aims to rank a page; AEO aims to have a passage chosen as the answer. The foundations are shared: crawlable pages, relevance and authority. AEO adds stricter answer-first writing and extractable structure.

Does AEO only matter for Google?

No. The same habits help featured snippets, voice assistants, Google AI Overviews, Bing Copilot, ChatGPT search and Perplexity. Each engine selects passages differently, so test your priority questions in the tools your buyers use.

How do I measure AEO?

Track a fixed list of questions. For each, record whether you appear in the featured snippet or AI answer and whether you are linked. Pair that with Search Console impressions and clicks for the same queries, and with leads from organic traffic.

Can schema markup get me into AI answers?

Schema helps engines understand entities and page type, but Google says no special schema is required for its AI features. Use it accurately, matching visible text, and spend most of your effort on the answer itself.
