What are TikTok Spark Ads? How They Work and When to Use

TikTok Spark Ads are ads made from real organic TikTok posts. Instead of uploading a video that only exists as an ad, you promote a post that already lives on a TikTok account: yours, an employee’s or a creator’s who has given permission. TikTok describes them as a native ad format that uses organic posts and their features in advertising (TikTok Ads Help).

Why TikTok Spark Ads matter

On TikTok, ads that look like ads get skipped. Spark Ads look and behave like the rest of the feed, because they are posts from real accounts.

For B2B brands, Spark Ads are often the lowest-risk way to test TikTok. You can promote a founder explaining a problem, a customer’s honest review or an employee’s day-in-the-life, with the credibility of a person rather than a logo.

How Spark Ads work

Spark Ads Regular (non-Spark) in-feed ads
Source An existing organic post A video uploaded in Ads Manager
Identity shown The posting account’s name and profile Your ad identity
Engagement Credited to the original post Stays on the ad only
Profile click Goes to the real account Goes to the ad identity
Permission Owner authorization needed for others’ posts None needed

Authorization. To promote someone else’s post, the account owner generates an authorization code for that video in the TikTok app and shares it with you, or approves a request through TikTok’s tools. TikTok’s guides list authorization periods of 7, 30, 60 or 365 days, chosen by the creator (TikTok Ads Help). Accounts linked through TikTok Business Center follow different rules and don’t expire unless the authorization is cancelled.

Example: a B2B Spark Ads test

A hypothetical payroll SaaS company wants demo requests from startup founders.

  1. The co-founder posts three 30-second videos on her own account: a payroll mistake founders make, a compliance deadline explainer, and a quick product walkthrough.
  2. She authorizes all three for 60 days.
  3. The team runs a $1,500 test split evenly across the three, optimizing for website visits to the demo page.
  4. After two weeks the compliance video has the lowest cost per landing page view and the most saves. It gets the remaining budget and becomes the template for the next three posts.

The deciding metric isn’t views. It’s the cost per demo request that sales accepts, which is why we run every paid ads test against CRM data.

Spark Ads work best when the person on camera is someone the buyer would want to hear from, usually a founder or practitioner, not a polished brand voice. My advice is to post organically first and let the audience tell you which video earns a boost. Paying to push a video nobody watched naturally rarely fixes it.

How to run TikTok Spark Ads

  1. Pick the voices

Founders, employees, customers or creators your buyers already trust. Agree terms in writing.

  2. Post natively first

Vertical video, a hook in the first two seconds, captions on, filmed for TikTok rather than cut from a TV ad.

  3. Get authorization

Ask the owner to generate a code for each post with an authorization period long enough for your test.

  4. Launch in Ads Manager

Choose the Spark Ad option, enter the code, add a call to action and destination URL.

  5. Test several posts

Three to five posts per test, so you learn which angle works, not just which video.

  6. Track past the click

Use the TikTok Pixel and Events API, then judge on qualified leads, not views.

Myth vs fact

MythTikTok is only for consumer brands, so Spark Ads won't work in B2B.
FactTikTok audiences include founders, operators and buyers. What fails in B2B is polished corporate creative. Real people explaining real problems is exactly the format Spark Ads are built for.

The same principle, putting a person ahead of the logo, drives LinkedIn Thought Leader Ads. If you need help producing native video, our Studios team does motion design.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a TikTok Spark Ads authorization code?

The account owner opens the video's ad settings in the TikTok app, turns on ad authorization, chooses a period and generates a code. They send you the code, and you enter it in TikTok Ads Manager when creating the ad.

Can I use any creator's video as a Spark Ad?

Only with their permission. The creator must authorize the specific post. Agree payment, duration and usage rights in writing before you ask for the code.

What happens when the authorization expires?

The ad stops being able to use the post. The creator can extend the authorization before it expires; after that, you need a new authorization.

Are Spark Ads better than regular TikTok ads?

Not always. Spark Ads usually feel more native and build organic proof. Regular in-feed ads give more control when you don't want comments or a personal account attached. Many advertisers test both.
