What Is Domain Authority? What the Score Really Means

Domain authority is a score that estimates how strong a website is in search, based mostly on the links pointing to it. Moz created the metric and scores sites from 1 to 100. Google doesn’t use it. It’s a third-party estimate, useful for comparing sites, but it’s not something Google measures or rewards. Similar scores exist from other tools: Ahrefs calls its version Domain Rating and Semrush uses Authority Score.

Key takeaways

  • DA is Moz's metric, built to predict ranking ability. It's not part of Google's algorithm.
  • It's relative: compare your score with competitors in your niche, not with an absolute target.
  • Scores can move when Moz updates its index or model, even if nothing changed on your site.
  • Use it to prioritize link prospects and benchmark progress, never as a goal on its own.

How domain authority is calculated

According to Moz, DA is calculated with a machine-learning model that looks mainly at backlink data, including the number of linking root domains and the quality of those links, and checks which signals correlate with rankings across many search results. The output is a comparative score. Moz itself describes it as a relative measure rather than an absolute one.

That has two practical consequences. First, a DA of 30 can be strong in a small B2B niche and weak in personal finance. Second, your score can drop when the web around you changes, for example when Moz’s index grows or large sites gain links faster than you.

Why domain authority matters, and where it doesn’t

DA is helpful for quick comparisons. If every site ranking for your target keyword has a much higher score, you know links are part of the gap. It’s also a fast filter for sorting a long list of possible link sources.

It’s not helpful as a target. Agencies that promise to “raise your DA to 50” can do it with low-quality links that move the score without improving rankings, and that can put you at risk under Google’s link spam policy.

Use DA to… Don’t use DA to…
Compare yourself with direct competitors Report SEO success to your board
Prioritize which link prospects to contact first Decide whether a link is safe or relevant
Spot whether links are the gap on a keyword Predict exact rankings for a page
Track a long-term trend alongside traffic Judge sites in a different niche

Myth vs fact

MythGoogle uses domain authority to rank websites.
FactDA is Moz's metric. Moz states it isn't a direct ranking factor. Google uses its own signals, which it doesn't publish as a single score.
MythA higher DA always means more traffic.
FactDA mostly reflects links. A site with modest DA and pages that match search intent can outrank higher-DA competitors on specific queries.

Example from our work

I get asked to raise a site's DA more than almost anything else, and I always steer the conversation back to pages. A higher score looks good in a deck, but buyers don't search for your domain metric. We compare the pages that outrank you, work out whether links or relevance is the gap, and fix that. Sometimes the answer is a better page, not more links.

How to improve the signals behind domain authority

You can’t edit DA directly. You improve the things it tries to estimate, which are also things Google values.

Strengthen your site's authority the right way

  1. Earn links from relevant sites

Focus on referring domains in your industry. See our guide to link building.

  2. Recover lost links

Redirect old URLs that still have backlinks pointing at them to the closest live page.

  3. Publish citable content

Original data, clear definitions and tools are what other writers link to.

  4. Strengthen internal linking

Pass strength from your most-linked pages to the pages you want to rank.

  5. Track the right outcomes

Report qualified organic traffic, rankings for target keywords and leads. Watch DA as a background trend.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good domain authority score?

There's no universal good score because DA is relative. Compare yourself with the sites ranking for your target keywords. If they sit within a few points of you, links probably aren't your main gap. If they're far higher, you'll need stronger links or less competitive keywords.

Why did my domain authority drop?

Common reasons are lost backlinks, Moz updating its index or model, or competitors and large sites gaining links faster than you. If your traffic and rankings are steady, a DA drop alone isn't a reason to worry.

How long does it take to increase domain authority?

It usually takes months, because it depends on earning links from new referring domains and on Moz recrawling them. Expect gradual movement from steady link building, not quick jumps.

Is domain authority the same as domain rating?

They're similar ideas from different companies. Moz's Domain Authority and Ahrefs' Domain Rating both estimate site strength from links, but they use different data and formulas, so the numbers won't match. Don't compare a DA from one tool with a DR from another.
